Education was not important to my family, but life skills were. Dad taught us so many skills that today people are going to uni to learn. Every year Dad would make us plant 10,000 kumara plants. I hated it! Dad taught us things like how to feed your family with what you can provide, how to change the oil in the car and how to ride a horse. Our back yard was full of veges, no grass to play on. Our weekends were spent weeding gardens and mowing lawns, we weren’t allowed to play out on the road with the other kids. As much as I hated it, I was really lucky. Lucky that Dad spent the time with us to teach us those skills. I have taken on a lot of what my dad has taught me, and I am a lot like him, very stubborn and strong headed. I do what I say I’m gonna do.

Last week I went with my grandchildren to buy vege plants for the garden. Its now my job to teach my grandchildren what my dad taught me.
