I never had a full appreciation of my mum growing up. The way she made sure we were safe and had the necessities, sacrificing her life to give what she could to us. She set us up to achieve in life, to go out and do well. I had my first child at 18 and my mum was there to provide care so that I could go out and work. She has done this with all of her grandchildren. She never wanted us to to be just another statistic, another person on a benefit. Mum’s support allowed us to progress in our careers. My mum was a quiet person and I watched people take advantage of her at times because she didn’t speak up. I decided I wanted to be the voice for people who may not be able to speak for themselves. I am now in a role where I can change how people think about others, and how they are treated. I am so proud when I look back over the last 10 years and see changes in this massive organisation that I am part of. If I can make a small difference then I will.
